St Matthew's School was opened in January 1969, and from the beginning has been Catholic.
A quotation from the document "A CATHOLIC SCHOOL" (C.T.S.S323) best explains the purpose of our school:-
"Christ is the foundation of the whole educational enterprise in a Catholic School. His revelation gives new meaning to life and helps man to direct his thought, action and will according to the Gospel, making the beatitudes his norm of life. The fact that in their own individual ways all members of the school community share this Christian vision, makes the school "Catholic", principles of the Gospel in this manner become the educational norms since the school then has them as its
internal motivation and final goal".
St Matthew's Catholic Primary School was officially opened by the Bishop of Leeds, The Right Revered W G Wheeler M.A. on 2 May 1969. The school had opened its doors for the first time in January 1969 and receives children from the parishes of St Matthew's, Allerton and Sacred Heart, Thornton.
